President Goodluck Jonathan has settled for the choice of Bayero University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Attahiru Jega (OFR), as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The leftists political scientist, and ex president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU), Jega replaces controversial Maurice Iwu, who was sacked in April 2010.
Barely two weeks ago, President Goodluck Jonathan while feeding questions from reporters in Nice , France promised to announce this week his choice of who will oversee the electoral body and the all important national election come 2011.
The appointment of Attahiru Jega was confirmed at the end of Council of State (CoS) meeting held in Abuja during the early hours of today. At the same event President Jonathan was decorated with the GCFR award insignia by former President Shehu Shagari.
Reacting to his appointment, Jega promised not to let Nigerians down in their expectations of credible, free and fair elections in 2011.
