An Indian researcher in Bhopal has claimed that her work related to Ear Biometrics has been plagiarised by a Nigerian researcher and his student and published in an international journal.
Dr Ruma Purkait, a forensic anthropologist in Dr H S Gour University in Bhopal, has claimed that her work done in collaboration with IIT Kanpur has been reduplicated without her knowledge by a faculty and student duo from Covenant University, Ota Ogun state, Nigeria.
“”The authors would like to appreciate the support of Ruma Purkait of department of Anthropology at Sagar University in India for providing the ear dataset.” This they mentioned in their paper titled ”Automatic Ear Recognition System using Back Propagation Neural Network” which I never did. I was shocked to see that they have stolen my data without my consent,” she said.
Dr Purkait immediately brought this to the notice of the Editor of the journal and at the same time sought an answer from the authors of the papers — Dr Samuel Adebayo Daramola and his student Oladejo Daniel Oluwaninyo from the department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Covenant University Ota Ogun State, Nigeria.
“It was shocking when the authors wrote back stating that I should sell them the data now at an affordable price,” Dr Purkait said, adding that the Editor has sought an answer from the authors, who have claimed that their study is based on a data of 1,050 ear images supplied by Purkait.
“They used my name to authenticate their study which is not based on any data. They have also claimed a very high accuracy for their new method and have even given the details of experiment how the data was used in a stepwise manner. Their work is completely farce,” Dr Purkait said.

FALSE ACCUSATION ON PLAGIARISM
This is to refute the claim by Dr. Ruma Purkait of Dr H S Gour University in Bhopal, Indian that Dr Samuel Adebayo Daramola and Oladejo Daniel Oluwaninyo of Department of Electrical and information Engineering Covenant University Nigeria plagiarized her paper.
The paper titled “Automatic Ear Recognition System using Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN)” written by Dr Samuel Adebayo Daramola and Oladejo Daniel Oluwaninyo was published by International Journal of Video, Image Processing and Network Security. IJVIPNS-IJENS, Feb 2011. Vol: 11, No: 1. The contents, ideas, methodology and statements in this paper are original and not the same with any other papers include the paper titled “Ear Biometrics: A new Approach” written by Anupam Sana, Phalguni Gupta and Ruma Purkait.
We didn’t steal Purkait’s data. If there is any information claiming that Purkait’s data was used in our work such information is wrong and should be disregarded. We didn’t reduplicate Purkait’s paper in any form.
Thanks, it will be well.
I hope it will really be well Dr. Else it would be a big disgrace not only to you or the university but to Nigeria as a whole. The country has already recorded enough bad name.
Dr, I think you are being economical with the truth. Are you the only person that has done similar work? Why is it then that he is accusing only you? It is just that plagiarism has become a norm in Nigeria. Nowadays, most books written in Nigeria fully or partly plagiarised form books written by foreign authors.
Dr. Adebayo, you are just one of your kind. You are not alone in this kind of cheating, it’s just that you are unlucky this time. I suggest you desist from this intelectual fraud before the long arm of law catches up with you. This should sound as note of warning to Nigerian lecturers who are equally struggling to get paper publicatons at all cost.
Dr., My father used to say a good name is better than all the riches in the world, am not a doctor and I have not written anything however I can still hold my head up high because nobody I repeat nobody would ever accuse me of anything. Dr. please for god’s do your own research and pray for gods help at least nobody would gutter your name. Now look the name, Nigeria, your name and another drugs lord on trial next time ask yourself would my country people be proud of me. If you tried and fail trust me you would get more respect than copying other peoples work, now you arevnot only a disgrace to Nigeria you are a disgrace to your family, how many people use the name Hitler (noone because it is an been ternished with evil). Next time think of the wider implications, the trouble with some Nigerian parents is that they just open their legs and have children without proper training for these children my dad always told me to think of the consequences and the shame on the family but with some Nigerians all they want is money and fame, just think about heaven and hell, let the likes of babangida and obj continue they would get their reward always try and live a descent life and example to your kids my father was not rich but you know what I would rather have him than babangida who has blood on his hands. People talk about suffering on earth trust me you do not know what suffering means until when we all meet out maker let that be you guide. You wanted fame now all you achieve is disgrace.Thank you for adding to our problems, fraud, drugs, terrorism, etc now you join the list you retarded fool.
What a shame! Dr “Plenty Papers”! What will really ‘be well’? Even in a “religious” University? Na wow o…. So can you still speak in tongues? Please, for the sake God and posterity, always do the right thing. It’s not the big title, money, and ‘plenty papers’ you have that matters but your personal relationship with God. ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING!!
This claim of plagiarism by the Indians is false. I check out the paper and could not see anywhere the author acknowledge Ruma as the source of the data as claimed in this write up. According to this article, Ruma said the author acknowledge her as the source of their data (”The authors would like to appreciate the support of Ruma Purkait of department of Anthropology at Sagar University in India for providing the ear dataset.” ). That claim is not true.
See this link for the said publication and show me where Ruma Purkait was acknowledged: http://www.ijens.org/Vol%2011%20I%2001/118001-3232%20IJVIPNS-IJENS.pdf
This Indians just think they are the origin of all wisdom. I hope the naija author can get a good lawyer to claim some damages from the lazy indians.
Pls, note that I dont know either the Nigerian authors nor the indian.
Iam proud of you Dr. Pls country people let learn how to appreciate ourselves
boooo 2 d Indian prof…wat she said is a big lie…her name didn’t even appear in the journal article…nd 4 d rest of u wit d accursed Nigerian mentality wen will u learn 2 defend ur own, yes d child is bad but dat doesn’t mean d mother will kill it or dispose of it…don’t use ur beef for covenant university 2 asses d situation rather assess it like a true patriotic Nigerian nd nt a biased untrustworthy Nigerian…nw wit dat said a big applause for the student and his supervisor.
The paper under contention published by S. A. Daramola and his student is entitled;
“Automatic Ear Recognition System using Back Propagation Neural Network”. Just google it and then copy the link below and paste on google and search. Then make your conclusions.
LIE NUMBER ONE: There is no where in the paper that the Indian is acknowledged as he falsely claims (see the link below).
I think this Indian is looking for cheap popularity through blackmail.
In a family of many kids, Mr cat may not be responsible for every missing fish in a pot of soup.
Daramola and co should sue the Indian for libel.
I do not want to pick any sides but truthfully I feel that non of the aggrieved parties should let sleeping dogs lie, a court injunction must be made and we must get to the bottom of all this.
WE MUST SAY NO TO PLAGIARISM AND NO TO FALSE ACCUSATIONS!!!
What is this Indian woman saying, covenant university cannot steal your article, both covenant and landmark are the best universities in Nigeria they cant stoop so low to do that so i suggest you check well because when it comes to anything relating to Covenant and Landmark standards are just too high as a student of Landmark university i know this.
The articles have completely different volumes of data, and her claims are entirely false, because the journal wouldn’t have been published if there were any plagiarism issues, Diagboya Paul N, Peter Nonso Okoli and Deji, Education demands you read and think before you reply, thank you and God bless Covenant University
It high time Nigerians started appreciating their intellectuals. I think it would save a lot of stress and time wasting if Nigerians take up the habit of reading & logical thinking before commenting on sensitive issues like this.
(1) How possible would a reputable international e-journal publish a plagiarized work or not duly scrutinize works before publishing.
(2)@Abdulazeez, Deji & co, plz take up d habit of reading, intelligent thinking & constructive criticism.( Go read the journal intensely)
GOD BLESS CU…God bless the Dr & his student
