‘Civil war looms in Libya’

By Nigerians Abroad news wire

Son of libya’s strongman - Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi - Saif al-Islam, has warned of imminent civil war, if the ongoing uprising in the North African State continues.

Saif al-Islam made the comment while appearing on a state television on Sunday evening.

“We will agreed on a new Libya, a true libya. Either this or Libyans be ready for  separatism and civil war. Forget oil, forget gas, forget all these resources and be ready for chaos,” he said.

On February 15, Libyans living in Benghazi, the country’s second largest city started a wave of uprising to protest Gaddafi’s 41year rule of the oil-rich country.

The Benghazi protest, inspired by popular uprising that forced out Tunisian and Egyptian presidents early in the year has now taken over parts of the country, which includes Tripoli - Libya’s capital and Gaddafi’s strong hold.

Benghazi is home to major opposition movements in Libya. This include the National Front for the Salvation of Libya and the National Conference of the Libyan Opposition

Unconfirmed report indicates that Gaddafi may have left the country for Venezuela.

There are also reports of mercenaries entering Libya from neighbouring countries and Air Force fighter jets firing rockets into crowd of protesters.

Meanwhile numbers of Libya’s  United Nations diplomats and representatives have announced their resignation on Monday afternoon and accused Gaddafi of genocide.

Although, Libya has the highest human development rating in Africa, however, the country is notorious for its autocratic rule, clamps down on opposition  and restricted freedom of speech.

Gaddafi, a divisive leader among committee of nations, back in March 2010, said Nigeria should split along ethnic line. The reckless comments sparked diplomatic row between the two oil producing nations and forced other African countries to intervened.

International observers believe that the ongoing mass protest, which has caused an increase in oil prices, may marked the end of Gaddafi’s long standing rule.
